For over a decade, if you tried to put a link in an Instagram caption, it just sat there like plain text, mocking you. We’ve all been there: typing out “Link in bio!” or using fancy automated DM tools just to get a customer from a post to a product page.

But as of March 2026, Meta has finally started testing clickable links directly in Instagram captions.

Here is everything you need to know about this game-changing update and what it means for your small business.

The “Catch” (For Now)

Before we all go deleting our Linktrees, there are a few things to keep in mind. This is currently a limited test.

  • Meta Verified Only: At the moment, this is only appearing for creators and businesses with that blue tick (Meta Verified subscribers).
  • The 10-Link Limit: You aren’t allowed to spam. Users in the test group are currently capped at 10 clickable links per month.
  • Mobile Only: Interestingly, the links are clickable on the Instagram app, but they’re still appearing as plain text on desktop browsers.

Why This is a Big Deal for Small Businesses

Instagram has always been a bit of a “walled garden.” They wanted to keep you on the app. By allowing links in captions, they are making it much easier for your customers to take action.

  1. Direct Conversions: If you’re a local shop in Cheshire launching a new product, you can link directly to that item. No more making your customers click your profile, click a link, and then search for the product.
  2. Less “Friction”: Every extra click is a chance for a customer to get distracted (or for the kids to start shouting for a snack!). Reducing those clicks means more sales.
  3. Better Storytelling: You can write a great caption about a new blog post or a local event and drop the link right where the context is.

Does “Link in Bio” Still Matter?

Yes! Think of your “Link in Bio” as your digital shop window. It’s where people go to see everything you offer. The new caption links are more like a “Product of the Week” display at the till. They are specific, timely, and intentional.

Even if this rolls out to everyone, you’ll still want that central hub in your profile for new followers who are just “window shopping” your feed.

Our Take: Is it worth the £14.99?

A lot of people are asking if they should sign up for Meta Verified just to get this feature.

If you’re a small business that relies heavily on driving traffic to a website (like an e-commerce store or a booking platform), those 10 direct links a month could easily pay for the subscription in saved “customer drop-off.” However, if you’re still growing, the Link Sticker in Stories is still free and works brilliantly!

What’s Next?

We’ll be keeping a very close eye on this. If Meta sees that people are clicking these links without the feed becoming a “spam-fest,” we expect to see a wider rollout later this year.
